This is the second highest of the seven North East local authority areas which make up the LA7 (Sunderland, South Tyneside, County Durham, Northumberland, Newcastle, Gateshead and North Tyneside).

This week’s rate compares to a rate of 299.2 per 100,000 people the week before, which works out at 831 people who were given positive tests.

The figures place it in 40th position in a table of all council areas across England.

The figures, for the seven days to October 18, are based on tests carried out in laboratories, known as pillar one of the Government’s testing programme, and in the wider community, pillar two.

The rate is expressed as the number of new cases per 100,000 people.

Data for the most recent four days (October 19-22) has been excluded as it is incomplete and does not reflect the true number of cases.

Sunderland's latest infection rate has been announced.
