Sunderland boy, eight, uses pocket money to buy food bank donations after seeing impact of coronavirus crisis

After seeing the struggles of vulnerable people and the empty shelves in his local supermarket, Elliot Hooper was inspired to do all he could to help others.

The eight-year-old, who attends Barnes Junior School, had been due to bring in donations for what may be his last day at school for the academic year.

But having seen the bare shelves at supermarkets in Sunderland, Elliot went above and beyond by using his own pocket money to buy an array of supplies.

Parents Craig and Kelly Hooper say they couldn’t be prouder of his kind and generous nature.

Craig, 38, said: “Elliot had been in a couple of supermarkets with us and he noticed how bare the shelves were.

“I’d been to Poundstretcher and had told him there was quite a lot of food there and he said he wanted to spend his pocket money.

“His words were that other people need it more than he did.

“We’re really proud of him. He’s always coming up with ideas to help people out. He’s asked a few times about sending stuff to Africa.

“He’s really thoughtful when it comes to stuff like this.”
