“We just wanted to give people a little help,” said Sam Morton, co-founder and chief commercial officer. “As a North East based tech company we felt we could contribute something.”

Sam, from Bamburgh, set up the business in 2014 with chief executive Gary Hunter.

It now employs 30 staff but they have had to change tack as a result of the coronavirus pandemic.

Sam explained: “Our money-saving app has built up an audience of three million in the UK over the last six years, finding deals and bargains.

“We created a rewards platform where businesses could reward staff with discounts at high street retailers, bars, restaurants and the like.

“Obviously, coronavirus is having a big impact on our business so we thought about what we could do and came up with the idea of helping key workers.

“While many of us work from home and try to carry on as best we can, many thousands of people, like NHS staff, emergency services and other key workers have to go out and help the country get through this.

“Our tech team has turned around a new version of the app in record time, working day and night, and it was launched on Tuesday afternoon. More than 3,000 people have signed up already and it’s growing quickly.

“You buy the gift from us and get a discount code. With many cashback schemes you can wait 30-90 days but our app saves people money instantly.”

Now, the company is going a step further so people can make donations to NHS workers.

“Anyone will be able to go on to the site and make a donation and we will dish them out to people working for the NHS as credit,” said Sam.
