13 pictures from Sunderland's first day in Lockdown 2 as city stays home

Almost eight months after the the UK was first locked down in an attempt to slow the spread of coronavirus, non-essential shops, restaurants and leisure facilities have been told to close their doors again.

Thursday, November 5, marks the first day of the four-week ‘Lockdown 2’ which will run until Wednesday, December 2.

Residents have been told they must stay at home other than for specific reasons, including shopping for essentials, travelling to work and exercising.

The NHS has been moved to its highest state of alert as hospitals battle to manage the rising numbers of Covid-19 patients needing care.

Sunderland’s empty streets are in stark contrast to photographs taken just 24 hours before, which showed scores of people doing some last-minute shopping in the city centre.

Here’s what it looks like across the city on Thursday.
