Adelle Stubbs usually teaches phonics to her Year One pupils at Valley Road School in Hendon.

But with the school only open to children of key workers, Adelle, like other parents, is now homeschooling her daughter, Evelyn, five.

To help people get into a routine with their kids, the teacher, who is also mum to Abel, three, began filming her and Evelyn’s phonics sessions for YouTube and it’s proved a useful educational tool for the bulk of parents who have found themselves becoming makeshift teachers.

Adelle, whose married name is Burnicle, said: “The videos are aimed at Year One and Two and even reception can have a go.

“I started doing phonics with Evelyn at home and people asked if I’d do a video and they’ve been getting a really good response, the first one has had 2,000 views.

“They’re around 15 minutes long and I’ve been uploading them on weekday mornings, it’s one less thing for parents to stress about.”

Although Adelle is a professional teacher, she says homeschooling is a difficult task for people in lockdown.

“If I wasn’t a teacher, I don’t think I’d know where to start,” she explained. “Most parents would never envisage having to teach, but the videos are aimed at helping them get children engaged and involved.

“Most people do Joe Wicks PE sessions at 9am, so this is something they can do after that.”
