How a Sunderland College lecturer is cooking up a storm to help others

Christine Bell-Thompson, who teaches hairdressing at Sunderland College’s City Campus, has joined a group of volunteers who are providing hot meals free of charge to those in need during the coronavirus pandemic.
The group are cooking meals such as soup and shepherd’s pie at the Fulforth Community Centre in Durham and deliver them twice a week to residents in the local area.

Hide AdEven though she is busy helping the local community, Christine is continuing to deliver online learning to her students who are currently studying at home.
She explains how the project started: “The Fulforth Community Centre teamed up with our village tearoom after it closed to try and offer hot food twice a week for the elderly and vulnerable people.
“Originally the meals were for collection only but obviously the elderly and vulnerable can’t get out so I offered to deliver with my daughter and it just went from there.
“The first day over 80 meals were delivered which has now increased to 155, being prepared by five cooks with five cars distributing them in local area.”
