It was a nerve-racking day for students across the country on Thursday, August 20 as this year’s GCSE results were handed out.

Exams were unable to take place this summer due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic, meaning teenagers were instead awarded teachers’ predicted grades to determine the next steps in their journey. Echo photographer Kev Brady and reporter Kevin Clark headed out to Southmoor Academy in Sunderland to meet the students collecting their grades and find out how they got on. Students learn their grades after weeks of anticipation.
Chloe secured four 9s, five 8s and a 7. She said: It is a bit better than I thought but I knew if I worked hard, I was capable of these grades.
Georgia scored a 6, a 5, five 4s and a 3. She said: I would have liked to have done a bit better but I have done what I could.
Sofia is off to Newcastle College to study aviation after scoring one 7, one 6, five 5s and a 2.
Lauren Joyce plans to study criminology, psychology and sociology for A-level. She saidL I am so proud of myself. She scored two 8s, four 7s and two 6s.

Sophie plans to study hair and beauty after scoring two 6s, a 5, four 4s and a 2.
A big smile from Alice Ward, who scored grade 9s across the board. She received 10 of them. She plans to study biology, chemistry, maths and art next year.
Christopher hopes his 10 grade 9s will be the gateway to studying medicine at Oxford. He said: I am shocked, I just can't believe it - I did not expect all 9s. He plans to take biology, chemistry and maths for A-level.
Lewis Young scored a 9, an 8, two 7s and two 6s. He hopes to study engineering, geography and law at A-level.
Maddison Wilson was overcome with her three 9, six 8s and a 6. She said: I am so happy I feel like I'm going to faint.
Syeda plans to study biology, chemistry and psychology at A-level. She received six 9s and three 8s for her grades.
