The new 68 number plates that are so rude the DVLA has banned them

The UK’s car licensing body has revealed the latest number plates deemed too offensive to be allowed on the road.

Every March and September the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA) creates a blacklist of registrations that it has withheld.

The banned plates are combinations of letters and numbers which could be interpreted as spelling out anything from a swear word or racial slur to the name of a terrorist organisation or playground taunt.

Among the plates banned since the start of the month are OR68 ASM, FA68 NNY, DO68 SHT and BA68 TRD. In total 400 registrations have been held back to avoid causing offence.

Also on the DVLA’s naughty list for the coming year are MY68 NOB, GA68 ANG, MU68 GER, BU68 ER* and DO68 GER.

To protect motorists’ sensibilities, the DVLA also has a standing list of banned letter combinations including *B** UMS, *G** ODS *R** APE, AN** GER and BO** SOM. And any plate ending in SEX, ASS or BUM is an automatic no-no as well.

A DVLA spokesperson said: “Many people enjoy displaying a personalised registration number and there are over 50 million registrations available on our website.

“The vast majority of registration numbers are made available but the agency holds back any combinations that may cause offence, embarrassment or are in poor taste.”

The DVLA holds regular auctions of plates it deems desirable, such as those that spell out common names or match vehicle models. Last year it made an estimated £160 million from personalised registrations.
