Fitzgeralds is their only outlet in Sunderland.

In the financial year ending Friday, January 31, 2019 the company sold three pubs in Morperth, Whitley Bay and Newcastle.

The firm reported a profit in the same period.

Fitzgeralds has three-bedroom private accommodation upstairs. It also has additional annual rental income of £18,000 from a business working in another part of the building upstairs.

The watering hole is described by its owners as: “Sunderland’s most popular pub, serving a fine selection of real ales.

“Close to the university, a regular winner of CAMRA Real Ale awards, and boasting a bar full of guest beers, Fitzgeralds is the traditional pub of choice for students, locals, regulars, tourists, visitors to the city, and many more.”

Fitzgeralds was named as Sunderland and South Tyneside’s CAMRA (Campaign for Real Ale) Pub of the Year in 2012.

It is listed in the CAMRA Good Beer Guide for 2020, its 26th consecutive year in the book.

It had previously been Greensleeves, changing to Fitzgeralds in 1994 when it bought the property next door, which was then converted into a second bar.

CAMRA is keen to see it continue as it is; as a traditional pub with real ale, wooden fittings, quiz nights and a dartboard.

The chair of Sunderland and South Tyneside branch of CAMRA, Michael Wynne, said he was interested to see that the place was up for sale.

He added: “Fitzgeralds is a very good pub. The Fitzgeralds group has always been one of the good guys. The number of local brewers they’ve supported has been phenomenal.

“They give their managers a free hand. We just hope it’s sold to someone who won’t make drastic changes. That would be a shame. Why change a winning formula?”
