Barter Books, housed within Alnwick’s former railway station, would expect to attract around 350,000 visitors in a normal year.

However, when it reopens on Monday, June 15 after a three-month shutdown due to coronavirus, there will be a markedly different feel as it limits customer numbers to a maximum of 30.

In a message to customers, Mary Manley, who launched the business with her husband Stuart in 1991, said: “It’s certainly good news for us - and we very much hope for you, too.”

The reopening includes both the Station Buffet and Paradise Ice Cream Parlour, which was launched in January. Both will operate as takeaway only for now and with a reduced menu.

Mary, outlining the new rules, said: “We will be following government guidelines and restrictions similar to those of supermarkets, as follows:

“You will be issued with disposable gloves on entry to protect both you and others.

“Entry will be limited to a maximum of 30 at a time, so you may have to wait outside on a one-out one-in basis.

“The bookshop is marked out in the usual two metres apart lines to help you observe the standard rules of social distancing.”

“We will also be unable to accept incoming books for now, but any existing Barter credit can be spent as normal,” said Mary.

Orders for takeaway can be made at the buffet counter which can allow two customers at a time, or on the phone, 01665 604444.

“In the meantime, please take care,” said Mary. “It’s not been easy, nor is it over yet. But in spite of all the restrictions and self-distancing, we have perhaps drawn closer to each other in another sense than ever before. And long may that last.”
