11 places that are ideal for a pre-theatre meal ahead of a Sunderland Empire show
There’s a host of top shows heading to Sunderland Empire this year, with huge blockbuster Disney’s The Lion King currently enjoying a seven-week run.
If you’re heading to the Sunderland Empire, here’s some of the best places in the city for pre-theatre dining that are all a stone’s throw away from the venue, or a couple of minutes walk. Places fill up fast, however, so it’s best to book ahead where possible.

5. The Dun Cow, High Street West
Directly opposite the Empire, The Dun Cow is one of the most-handsome pubs in the city centre and is a sister pub to The Engine Room. Food is served in the bar and includes options such as baked Camembert sharing board, halloumi fries and tempura prawns. Photo: Stu Norton

6. Wild Fire pizza at The Ship Isis, Silksworth Row
For some of the best pizzas in the city, if not the North East, try the Neapolitan delights on offer at Wild Fire pizza at the historic Ship Isis pub in Silksworth Row. Pizzas are served Tuesdays from 4pm - 8.30pm, Wednesday and Thursday 4pm - 9pm, Friday 3pm-9pm, Saturday 12pm - 9pm and Sunday 12pm - 5pm. You can't book ahead as it's walk ins only, so make sure you get there in plenty of time to bag a pizza - as once the dough's gone, it's gone! Make sure to try the JFC fried chicken too, which is ridiculously moreish. Photo: Josh Wild

7. The Peacock, Keel Square
The Peacock in Keel Square is at the heart of all the developments taking place in the city at the minute. It's a pub with plenty of quirky features and period charm thanks to recent restoration works. Note, it's not open seven days a week. The pub is open Wednesday to Sunday. Food options include open sandwiches, soups, salads, burgers and classics such as pie of the day. Photo: JPI Media

8. Spice Empire Church Lane
For a pre-curtain up curry try Spice Empire in Church Lane, which has undergone a major makeover in recent years creating a stylish dining area. There's some great deals on offer, such as Thursday night and Sunday specials where you can pick up a starter, main and side for £11.95. Photo: jpi media
