Attacker jailed after suddenly assaulting Sunderland man while he watched television

An attacker who repeatedly grabbed another man by the throat while he was watching television has been jailed.

Colin John Brown, 35, was told a prison sentence was inevitable because he committed the offence while still on licence following a previous conviction.

Magistrates said the assault, which took place at Pennywell Bail Hostel, in Hylton Road, Sunderland, “was aggravated by the defendant’s record of previous offending”.

Brown, of no fixed address, was said to have unexpectedly carried out the attack after entering a common room area at the hostel in a drunken state.

Police were called and he was jailed for four weeks just days later at South Tyneside Magistrates’ Court after he admitted carrying out the assault at around 10pm on February 23.

Brown, who given credit for his guilty plea when sentence was determined, was also ordered to pay his victim £100 compensation by the end of May next year.
