We asked our members of the Wearside Echoes social media page and what a response we got.
Many of you stayed in the North East and often got buses or trains to Crimdon, Staindrop or Stanhope.
Today, as we keep our fingers crossed for brighter times ahead after the pandemic, we look back on your wonderful memories of childhood vacations.
1. Middleton School Camp in 1949
Pupils of Bishopwearmouth Girl's School enjoy the sweet country air and sunshine at the Middleton in Teesdale summer camp in 1949. Gordon Donkin said he went to 'Middleton Camp with the school, other than that we never went on holiday. Neither did any of the kids I grew up with. A teacher once asked the whole class if anyone was going away on holiday during the 6 weeks. One lad put his hand up, he was going to his aunties in Carlisle." Photo: se

3. Relaxing outside the beehive huts at Crimdon
A 1950s view of Crimdon. Shauna Wisbeck remembered 'Wales to visit family. Blackpool day trips, then my parents bought a caravan at Crimdon Dene. Lovely childhood memories of Crimdon." Photo: Hartlepool Mail
4. Fun closer to home
These young Wearsiders enjoy an early lunch of new potatoes at their camp near South Hylton in August 1954. Nicky Brown remembered: "Camping in a murky green ridge tent up at Westgate for the whole shipyard fortnight. Went the same place every year. There was next to nowt there bar a couple of swings and the river. There was always at least one thunderstorm, whereupon we were warned not to touch the sides of the tent. We would be sat near the sides, hands behind our backs, daring ourselves to touch the sides to see what would happen." Photo: Sunderland Echo
