Jones is no stranger to the North East having begun his career at Middlesbrough.

The winger came through the ranks on Teesside but made just one senior appearance at the Riverside Stadium – in a 2013 FA Cup tie against Hastings United.

He subsequently enjoyed loan spells at Hartlepool United and Cambridge United in League Two, before joining Kilmarnock in 2016 after being released by Boro.

It was here where Jones’ career really kick-started, and he went on to put in a string of impressive performances during his three years at Rugby Park.

International recognition came too, as Northern Ireland began to hand Jones the first of his 11 senior caps.

His 11 goals in 118 appearances, coupled with a plethora of assists, saw Rangers move to sign the winger on a pre-contract agreement in 2019 – and he joined the Ibrox club in the summer of the same year.

His Rangers career has been stop-start, but there have been moments of encouragement.

Jones remains under contract in Glasgow until 2023 and has thus far scored once in 19 games for the side.

What type of player is Jordan Jones?

In many respects, Jones is a traditional winger.

He has plenty of pace and bags of trickery and isn’t afraid to run at his man.

Lee Johnson has made no secret of his desire to add some extra pace to his forward line this month as he continues to look to stretch teams, and Jones seems to fit the bill in that regard.

The winger is known to be a confident player and isn’t shy at trying his luck from range – often to great success.

What has current manager Steven Gerrard said about Jordan Jones?

Gerrard has been complimentary of Jones in the past, and hailed him as a ‘real threat’ earlier this season.

The Ranger boss told Sky Sports: “I thought he was excellent. I thought he was a threat throughout, he played to his strengths, he brought his attributes to the game.

"I won't settle for anything less than the real Jordan Jones.

"He showed it today, he showed it in a cameo on Thursday night and if he keeps doing it, he'll keep getting appearances for Rangers."

It’s a promising verdict for Sunderland as they prepare to welcome Jones into the fold.

What do we know about Jordan Jones’ transfer to Sunderland?

Reports north of the border have claimed that the move for Jones is nearing completion – and could even be sealed in time for the winger to feature against Gillingham on Saturday.

The deal will be a loan move until the end of the current campaign.

Jones, given his age, will count towards Sunderland’s salary cap and squad cap calculations.
