Pedestrian taken to hospital with head injuries following collision on Wearmouth Bridge

One person has been taken to hospital after emergency services were called to reports of a collision between a car and a pedestrian on Wearmouth Bridge.

Emergency services were called to Wearmouth Bridge in Sunderland at 8.35am this morning, Friday, May 21 to a report of a collision involving a car and a pedestrian.

The pedestrian was taken to Sunderland Royal Hospital with injuries to their face and head.

A spokesperson for the North East Ambulance Service said: "We were called at 8.26am to reports of a road traffic collision involving a pedestrian and a vehicle on Wearmouth Bridge.

"We sent a specialist paramedic and an ambulance and one patient was taken to Sunderland Royal Hospital with injuries to the face and head."

All southbound lanes on the bridge have now reopened as one northbound lane is still partially obstructed by a Police vehicle.

A Northumbria Police spokesperson said: “At 8.35am today (Friday) we received a report of a collision involving a car and a pedestrian on the Wearmouth Bridge in Sunderland.

“Emergency services are at the scene.”
