Tributes paid to Matty Roseberry as well-known Sunderland businessman and former Durham cricket director passes away

Tributes have been paid to Matty Roseberry following the death of the well-known Sunderland businessman and former Durham County Cricket Club director.

A passionate Sunderland AFC fan who began his working life at Wearmouth Colliery and then as an apprentice bricklayer, Matty, 75, went on to own the Rainton Meadows Arena and various working mens’ clubs and pubs down the years, including the Golden Lion in South Hylton, where Rod Stewart once famously visited.

Durham County Cricket Club, where Matty’s eldest son Mike also became captain, said: “Matty was one of the first appointed Directors of the Club in 1992 and was part of the group that helped develop cricket in the region, beginning the rise of Durham County Cricket Club to the top flight.

“Having given over 10 years’ service to Durham, Matty helped Durham move into our home of Emirates Riverside.

“After a short illness Matty passed away this morning.”
