The tunes are carefully chosen to help fans create the right atmosphere in the ground, but the ones that have been the best over the years is a highly subjective affair. The following list of 11 is in order of personal preference. You needn’t agree – and probably don’t. So starting from the best downwards …
5. Green Onions - Booker T & the MGs
We’re cheating here. This was actually played at the end of games in the 2017-18 season if Sunderland hadn't won. It was heard an awful lot during the 2017-18 season. But it's a great tune, even if it is sullied by association. Photo: Sunderland Echo
6. The Theme from Z-Cars
Fondly remembered from Roker Park in the 70s and 80s, it's actually a Liverpool folk song called Johnny Todd, but used as the theme from Z-Cars, which was a hard-hitting BBC police drama (as you can see). Everton used it too, but no one has the faintest idea why it was appropriated by Sunderland. Perhaps a club director just liked it. Da-da-daaa-da-da-da ... etc. Photo: Getty Images.
7. The Beginning of the Twist - The Futureheads
Wearside favourites The Futureheads provide the only local talent on the list with this catchy indie hit. Pity at least one member of the band supports Manchester United. But it's a good song. Photo: Sunderland Echo
8. We Will Rock You - Queen
Aah, back to Roker Park again, where the accompanying stomping to this song echoed around the ground. I personally have never much liked Queen. No matter. I’m in a minority and the song set the right tempo and brings back more pleasant memories; even if hobbledehoys would sing along but replace the word 'rock'. Photo: Getty Images
