Thief jailed after stealing £9,000 from Sunderland relatives

A thief who stole £9,000 from two members of his own family has been jailed for a “serious breach of trust”.

Craig Thomas Murray plundered one Sunderland relative’s account on 64 occasions over a six-week period to fleece him of £6,600 after obtaining his bank details for an agreed online transaction.

He also stole another £2,410 from a second relative over a three-week period by spending the sum online in her name.

South Tyneside Magistrates’ Court has now jailed Murray for a year after judging the offences to be “a serious breach of trust of close family”.

Murray, 30, of Gretna Terrace, Gateshead, pleaded guilty to stealing the £6,600 between October 15, 2019, and November 29, 2019.

He also admitted stealing the £2,410 between April 20, 2020, and May 10, 2020.

The court, which jailed him for 26 weeks for each offence, also ordered him to pay compensation of £700 to the male relative and £300 to to the female relative.
