The Scot had a decent base to build on – with a good squad including the likes of Lamine Kone, Wahabi Kahzri and Jermain Defoe left by the departing Sam Allardyce…
Moyes, however, wanted to stamp his own mark on Sunderland’s squad… here’s what happened to his Stadium of Light signings.
1. BRYAN OVIEDO
One of David Moyes' many Everton old boys, the left-back suffered back-to-back relegations, a play-off final defeat and a Checkatrade Trophy final defeat in three years at the Stadium of Light. The Costa Rica international returned to FC Copenhagen in July 2019. Photo: Nathan Stirk
2. MICHAEL SIMOES DOMINGUES
Signed by Moyes, 'Mika' didn't play a single first team game, then had his contract terminated. The goalkeeper joined Portugal side Os Belenenses SAD in the Primeira Liga in 2018 - a team Sunderland faced a friendly last summer. The shot-stopper now plays for Académica. Photo: JPIMEDIA
3. VICTOR ANICHEBE
Another ex-Everton man, but a fan favourite on Wearside never the less. 'Big Vic' could have been a useful player for Sunderland had he remained fit - a factor Moyes was aware of when signing the Nigeria striker. Anichebe is currently a free agent despite going on trial with the Black Cats' League One rivals Doncaster Rovers last January. Photo: Laurence Griffiths
4. ADNAN JANUZAJ
Signing such highly-rated youngster on loan seemed like a coup at the time as Januazaj had played well - and scored - against Sunderland previously. How wrong we were! The 25-year-old Belgian now plays in Spain for Real Sociedad. A real shame it didn't work out for him on Wearside, his chant to the tune of Made of Stone by The Stone Roses was a belter!
