The Black Cats strolled into a three-goal lead at the interval thanks to a Grant Leadbitter penalty, a well-taken Charlie Wyke effort, and an impressive first senior strike from youngster Jack Diamond.

Johnson's men are now up to eighth in the table – two points off the play-off places, and five off the automatic promotion spots.

Next up, Sunderland host mid-table AFC Wimbledon at the Stadium of Light on Tuesday evening.
