OLYMPIC champions Christopher Dean and Jayne Torvill are bringing their sixth live Dancing on Ice UK tour to the region next month.
This year’s tour starts on Friday April 13, continuing on the 14th and 15th at the Metro Radio Arena in Newcastle.
The show will feature celebrities from the recent ITV1 series including champion Matthew Wolfenden, Jorgie Porter, Chico, Chemmy Alcott, Andy Whyment, Jennifer Ellison and Heidi Range.
Also, 2011’s winner Sam Attwater will be joining the cast this year. He spoke to Marie Westmoreland about his involvement in the tour.
Marie: Dancing on Ice tour begins in Newcastle on Friday 13th, does the date make you any more nervous?
Sam: Friday the 13th is probably not the best date to start, but I’m excited. I’m really looking forward to it. I’m a bit rusty on the ice as I’ve not skated properly since last year’s tour.
Me and Brianne (Delcourt) started training three days ago. The first two days we didn’t do anything we just skated around catching up.
I’m just finding my feet again trying to get back into the swing of it in time for the show.
What do you make of the contestants on this year’s show?
The standard is extremely high this year, so for the tour pressure is on. I’ll have to brush the cobwebs off a bit more and get my standard up there to where everyone else’s is.
Do you feel added pressure since you won last year’s show?
Not really, the pressure thing, I’m not that bothered – I’ve already won it, (laughs).
I just really want to come out and enjoy it. The tour is when the fun really starts.
How does the tour compare to the TV show?
It’s similar. Everyone skates the first act and in the interval the audience text vote who they want to see in the second act.
The top five skate the second act and then the top two skate the Bolero and the judges decide.
There’s a lot of audience participation as well.
All the money goes to charity, so it’s all for a good cause and it’s a lot of fun.
If people haven’t been before the they should definitely come. Personally I think it’s a lot more fun than the ITV show.
Are you learning any new routines for the tour?
We have to do all new routines. I think I’m skating to Moves Like Jagger and Michael Buble Cry Me A River, so two great numbers and we have got to do the Bolero as well.
Which out of the two tracks do you prefer to skate to?
You’d think the slower songs would be easier to stake to, but their actually not because you you have to have more technique.
You have to last everything for longer, so it actually hurts more on the body. The fast routines, if it’s a sexy routine I love it. We’re gonna try and hopefully make it a little bit racy.
You’ll be skating with Brianne Delcourt again, is she nice to work with?
Yeah she is brilliant. I love skating with Brianne. Once you have like a connection with someone, it’s very hard to do it with someone else, as you know how each other move and everything else.
Getting back into training with her has been a lot of fun.
Who do you see as competition?
I’m not really thinking of it as a competition this year, last year I did. I just want to enjoy it.
I’d love to skate the Bolero as much as possible, but you only get to do that if the audience vote for you to do it. Hopefully I’ll get to skate it, it was my favourite number last year, so yeah I’d like to win a couple of nights.
How do you expect to get along with the other celebrities?
Well, last year Hayley Tamaddon was the champion of the year before and she skated on the tour and we accepted her in, so hopefully they’ll accept me in.
Not only am I coming in as the outsider, I’ve also got to catch up with the skating. I’ve met everyone and I’ve worked with Jorgie a little on Hollyoaks, so hopefully it’ll be all right.
Aside from Dancing on Ice you’ve had acting roles in EastEnders and Hollyoaks. Are you still pursuing your acting career?
I finished the tour last year and went straight into acting in Dreamboats and Petticoats (the musical). I want to be acting, doing serious dramas and period drams which is where my love is.
