A PLAY from two of the region’s top writers at one of our best venues – for a £1!
The Gala Theatre in Durham is offering 50 Echo readers the chance to see the latest play by Ed Waugh and Trevor Wood for just £1 instead of the usual price tag of £15.
The first 50 readers to book using the offer can redeem it for tickets to A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to Durham, which runs until Saturday.
Ed and Trevor, who have also penned Waiting for Gateaux, Maggie’s End and Dirty Dusting, teamed up with Visit County Durham to produce the play, which will commemorate the Lindisfarne Gospels going on show in Durham from today.
The play promises to be a fast-paced run through the most significant moments in the last 1,400 years of North East history, including the history of the region’s famous manuscript and St Cuthbert.
Former Sunderland Polytechnic student Ed said: “The people of Sunderland are really responsive to our shows. They travel to see our shows all over the region.
“This is our 10th play, but we have never been able to stage a production in Sunderland, which is such a shame.
“Sunderland has the Empire which is a wonderful 1,800-seater venue and it has the Royalty Theatre which is a fabulous venue for amateur productions, but it doesn’t have a mid-sized 500-seater venue like the Gala which is perfect for plays like ours.”
He added: “We thought the next best thing to staging a play in Sunderland would be to give people in Sunderland this offer.”
