A SCHOOLGIRL will be given her 15 minutes of fame on the Sunderland Empire stage.
Despite having only ever appeared in local dance and theatre school shows, Nina Cowan will tonight feature in a professional touring production of Fame.
Much like the characters of the show, Nina hopes to make it in the world of performing arts one day.
So the 13-year-old’s dreams came true when she found out she had won our competition to win a role in the show for tonight’s performance.
Nina, from Seaham, was given a preview of the show when she went along as a guest on opening night on Monday.
“I’d never seen the musical before but it was really good. The dancers were amazing,” said the St Anthony’s School pupil.
She added: “I heard about the competition through my friend as she was thinking of entering. I’ve always wanted to dance at the Empire so I thought I would give it a try too.
“I had to send a picture of myself doing a Fame pose so I did that famous leap from Fame. I couldn’t believe it when I found out I had won.”
Nina, who attends the Julie Stewart School of Dance as well as Seaham Youth Theatre, will appear in Act 2 and has a couple of walk on roles in key points in the show.
She said: “I’ve been dancing for about three years now but I’ve never done anything like this before. I can’t wait.”
A spokesman for theatre company Bill Kenwright, who are touring the show across the country, said: “We are delighted to give Nina the opportunity to be part of this dynamic and all new production. We wish her the best of luck with her fifteen minutes of Fame this week.”
The brand new stage version of the hit film and TV show is running at Sunderland Empire all this week.
The show brings the Oscar-winning musical film up-to-date while still sticking to the story of a group of star-struck wannabes on their quest for fame.
It’s set in 2014 at the world-famous High School for Performing Arts New York where young talented hopefuls undertake the journey of their lives. Songs that have been re-envisioned for the tour include Fame and Let’s Play a Love Scene.
