‘Tis the season to be jolly, and that was certainly the case at Jason Cook’s Comedy Club last night.

More than 5,000 North East children will wake up on Christmas morning to a present they wouldn’t have otherwise received thanks to the Hebburn funnyman.

Jason is a big supporter of charity, he really does do a lot to help others, and last night’s gig provided one of the most touching scenes I’ve ever witnessed.

Comedy fans were treated to a line-up of the region’s best comedians in exchange for a gift for a child.

And with more than 5,000 presents handed over, it’s sure to be a merry Christmas.

Jason, as ever, was a formidable host. His quick wit was put to good use as he bantered with the audience and got everyone revved up as he introduced each act.

He had everyone in stitches as he poked fun at the ‘posh lass’ sat in the theatre box and questioned a Northumbrian Water sewage worker about what exactly his job entails.

South Shields comedy poet Scott Tyrrell had everyone chuckling as he performed a poem that imagined Joseph leaving a review of the Bethlehem Inn on Trip Advisor and Steffen Peddie’s tales of Tynemouth market and being banned for life from St James’s Park for making a head-butting joke about Alan Pardew really raised the roof.

Kai Humphries delighted the crowd with his tales of standing up to his dad and had everyone nodding in agreement with his admittance of knowing you’re working class when your wine rack is filled with carrier bags.

Angry Jarrow comic Carl Hutchinson was hilarious as he bounded across the stage complaining about waiters who mess up your order and still ask for a tip and Mickey Hutton has people squealing with laughter as he shared rather unflattering tales about his other half.

The event was a real celebration of North East talent and of the generosity of the region’s people. Show us someone in need, and we’ll do what we can to help them.

BBC Radio Newcastle’s Alfie Joey gave a real crowd-pleasing performance as he read famous children’s book The Tiger Who Came To Tea in a variety of celebrity voices like Robert De Niro, Woody Allen and David Attenborough.

South Shields comic Chris Ramsey was a big draw for the evening, with the crowd going wild as he crept up behind Jason on the stage in a panto-style ‘he’s behind you’ skit.

His tales of new fatherhood were as hilarious as they were heartwarming and the way he shut down a heckling audience member had me in fits of laughter.

The night ended with a fantastic Run For Home sing-along with Lindisfarne’s Billy Mitchell.

The event, in support of Metro Radio’s Cash For Kids, was a real celebration of North East talent and of the generosity of the region’s people. Show us someone in need, and we’ll do what we can to help them.

It was an absolute delight to be a part of.
