A PLAYWRIGHT hopes his latest production is born to run – and run.
Inspired by his passion for Bruce Springsteen music, Lee Stewart has penned a play featuring the music of the New Jersey superstar.
“I am a big Bruce Springsteen fan and they always say write about what you know, so I did,” explained Lee from Castletown.
Rehearsals are now in full swing for Born in the Dark which will run at The Royalty Theatre, off Chester Road, next month.
Lee added: “People always think about Bruce Springsteen songs as these fist-pumping anthems, but the lyrics are actually beautiful.
“They are used in the play to add emotion to the scenes and when the main character is reminiscing.”
The play tells the story of 18-year-old Bruce Nelson, a loner who is obsessed with Bruce Springsteen, whose hits include Dancing in the Dark, Born to Run and Born in the USA.
It follows the lead character’s strained relationship with his mother since the death of his father and that with his girlfriend, who is losing patience with him.
Born in the Dark will be Lee’s first production on the main stage at The Royalty, after a play he co-wrote ran in the studio space last year.
He said: “I’ve written and directed this play, but I’m also acting in it too so I have three-pronged nerves.” The play is being staged over two nights as a stand-alone production and is not part of the theatre’s season.
l Born in the Dark will be staged at Royalty Theatre on August 8 and 9.
Tickets are £5 on the door.
