Dancers had a spring in their step in the hope of flying their way into this year’s pantomime - oh yes they did.
Auditions were held for dance roles in Aladdin, which will bring festive fun to Sunderland Empire this Christmas.
Local dance schools in attendance for the principal dancer auditions included Kathleen Davies Stage School, Shameem Karim School of Performing Arts and Muriel Harrison School of Dance and Drama who were all vying for a chance to star in the show.
Successful candidates will appear alongside Alison Hammond from ITV’s This Morning and Strictly Come Dancing; Coronation Street’s Terence Maynard and popular children’s presenter Derek Moran from Channel 5’s Milkshake!
Martin Dodd, producer at UK Productions, who are bringing the show to Sunderland, said: “I am delighted to be auditioning so much young talent from the area for our annual pantomime. The pantomime presents a rare and valuable opportunity for children and young adults who enjoy theatre and dance studies to work alongside seasoned performers in a professional show.
“Each year I am impressed by the wealth of talent we have to choose from and it is always difficult to make the decisions on who to leave out. With a host of stars on this year’s production I am sure the competition will be as fierce as ever from those wishing to take part.”
Alison rose to prominence in Big Brother, before becoming a presenter on This Morning. Last year she appeared in Strictly Come Dancing with her partner Aljaz. This led to Alison being named as a mentor on the first ever ‘People’s Strictly.’
Terence Maynard is a dab hand at ruffling the feathers of many Weatherfield residents on screen as Tony Stewart (Jason Grimshaw’s estranged Father) and now he has his sights set on Sunderland.
Derek Moran from Channel 5’s Milkshake! will shake things up this festive season as Wishee Washee alongside North East’s Ian Good who will be playing dame (Widow Twankey) and also directing Aladdin this year.
l Aladdin is at Sunderland Empire from December 11 to January 3.
