Retro refreshments were available, while the Winter Gardens had a Vintage and Retro Market with hair and beauty demonstrations and even a photobooth in which visitors could dress up to have their picture taken.

Laura Kemp, from organiser events company Sunderland Live, was delighted with the turn-out for Saturday’s festival.

“It has been absolutely brilliant,” she said.

“The weather has been perfect, we have had loads of people sitting out in the sun and listening to the music, the traders seem to be doing well.

“It is really good to see so many people here and such a broad age range too. We’ve had family groups of two of three generations, and it has been wonderful to see how many people have dressed up to make a real occasion of it.”
