Unlocking the Vault’s secret

A BASEMENT in Sunniside looks set to become an oasis of soul, swing, blues and jazz.

In a bid to create an alternative choice to the usual Friday night experience in Sunderland city centre, owners at Amore restaurant, in Tavistock Place, have launched a supper club.

Known as The Vault, the club’s aim is to provide a laid-back atmosphere where crowds can soak up the sounds on offer while lounging with a cocktail or two – or three.

I visited the first supper club with colleague Jane and with a first night crowd of 170 people, the club looks sets to be a success.

Tucked away in the restaurant’s back room, this new venture had attracted a more sophisticated, older crowd than the hordes who pack into the likes of Ttonic of a weekend.

You won’t find any thumping dance tracks on offer either. On our visit, singer Lulu James belted out tracks from artists including Bill Withers, Aretha Franklin and Amy Winehouse.

We washed the tunes down with some cocktails which were whipped up by expert, award-winning mixologists drafted in for the supper clubs.

Priced £5 each, the list includes French Martini, cosmopolitan and Morgan Spice mojito.

Amore owner Kam Chera, said: “The first supper club was a great success. We were overwhelmed by the response. We want to give people an alternative social scene.

“We get a lot of people eating in the restaurant who then spend £40 on taxis to spend the rest of the night in Newcastle, but we want to show you don’t have to do that to have a good night.”

People eating in Amore can book a table for dinner and reserve it for the rest of the evening at the supper club, or you can pop along from 10.30pm just for the club.

These supper club larks seem all the rage these days and Liberty Brown in Hylton Retail Park have also opened a club of this ilk.

Despite the name – which conjures up images of jarmies and cocoa – they’re introducing a different vibe to the weekend scene and are worth a visit if you want a night out with a slower, more sophisticated pace.

l The Vault takes place on the third Friday of every month from 10.30pm to 2am. The next one is on April 20. To book, tel. 565 0077.
