Have your say

THERE’S nothing quite like spending a Saturday afternoon with the ladies.

So the other weekend my brother’s girlfriend, Jess, and I headed out into South Shields.

After perusing the shops we had worked up an appetite so decided to head to The Fountain for some food.

The popular bar, in Highfield Road, has a good reputation for being a friendly local and you’ll always find the place busy.

It has quite a modern feel inside and, as well as a nice, raised seating area, there’s a beer garden for when the weather’s warmer and there’s a pool table, too.

Having only been in there for drinks, we decided to give the menu a try.

It was quite extensive with plenty of choice and the pub also do a two main meals for £10 offer.

The promotion includes traditional fish and chips, liver and onion, a 7oz rump steak and a 10oz gammon. There’s also quorn chilli for vegetarians.

For those feeling more peckish, the menu also boasts a mixed grill, or mega mixed grill, and a surf and turf and light lunch options are available, too.

After a good look through, Jess settled for the spicy bean burger while I chose the Italian-style chicken.

One of the key things I like about this pub is that the staff are very friendly, and the service we received was top drawer.

While Jess said her spicy bean burger was very tasty, my Italian-style chicken came with a lovely tomato dressing and the chicken was tender.

Although the desserts looked amazing, with dishes such as chocolate fudge cake and apple pie to chose from, both of us were full from our main course – The Fountain definitely do good portion sizes.

Drinks are reasonably priced with a Fosters costing £1.99, John Smiths £1.95 and Strongbow and Woodpecker, £2.61.

A glass of house wine is £2 and for the bottle, £6.25.

The Fountain also have Sky TV and 3D TV – and for the Sunderland fans, a coach to the Stadium of Light on a match day.

On a Monday night it’s quiz night and the pub has a darts team, pool team and 5s and 3s.
