“I FEEL the need, the need for speed.”

A classic line from a classic film, and what better way to watch the legend that is Top Gun, than under the stars in the shadow of Penshaw Monument?

As my partner-in-crime Wheeler was still suffering the after-effects of drinking from the night before, I headed to the Herrington Park drive-in with my fiance John and my two-year-old, Tate.

It was great to see so many couples, families and groups of mates heading back to the 50s to indulge in open-air cinema watching.

For £15 a car we were able to take a big whiff of nostalgia, eating hot dogs followed by sweet popcorn.

The council are planning a re-run in July – so get your hands on a convertible, rope in your friends and enjoy the novelty of watching iconic films in your car.
