A HOST of musicians are preparing to raise the roof at Sunderland Minster this weekend.

The second Sanctuary Festival takes place from tomorrow until Sunday and will see the landmark church taken over by live music, street food, local craft ales and outdoor games.

Fresh from successful sets at this month’s Split Festival, Barry Hyde and Lilliput join the line up of entertainment.

Other highlights are set to include The Jazz Pistols, George Shovlin Duo, Sir Jac’s Bantamac and The Heavenly Thrillbillies, along with acclaimed North East quartet, Scarlet Street.

Buskers wanting an opportunity to show their musical talent are also being asked to appear.

Organisers are looking for buskers to perform in the Town Park – the area around Sunderland Minster – during the afternoons of the festivals.

The plan is to supplement a range of family-friendly activities taking place during the day, with a small fee on offer to performers who are then able to continue to busk and collect
money.

Buskers need to be performing acoustically only or use battery amps between 1pm and 5pm for two half hour spots.

Sanctuary is being organised by a group of key stakeholders in conjunction with Sunderland Rotary with the aim of boosting funds for a variety of good causes.

The first Sanctuary event was held over the May Bank Holiday weekend and the aim now is to hold a similar festival four times a year.

Anyone interested in taking part in the busking sessions should email Andy Bradley at Andrew.bradley@bridgessunderland.co.uk

•Sanctuary runs at Sunderland Minster on Friday from 5pm until midnight, Saturday from 1pm until midnight and Sunday from 1pm until midnight. It’s aimed at a family audience during the day and an adult audience at night. There is free entry before 5pm and £3 after 5pm.
