STADIUM of Light bosses have hailed last night’s One Direction concert as a roaring success.
The home of the Black Cats welcomed 52,000 music fans last night as the world’s biggest boyband began the UK leg of their Where We Are world tour in Sunderland.
Harry, Liam, Niall, Louis and Zayn performed a 22 song set, including number one hit singles What Makes You Beautiful and Little Things.
Sunderland AFC commercial director, Gary Hutchinson, said: “One Direction are the most popular band in the world at the moment so to be able to welcome them to Sunderland was simply fantastic. It was one of the biggest shows we have ever staged at the Stadium of Light and the excitement around the region in the build up to the show was phenomenal.
“The promoter was delighted, the band thoroughly enjoyed their visit to Sunderland and the audience had a great time.
He added: “A significant amount of planning and preparation went into this show, which presented us with a very different dynamic in terms of audience from the previous concerts we have held.
“The evening went fantastically well, which is testament to a great team of people, including club staff, the city council, police, ambulance and fire services, transport agencies and other regional partners, whom we work in tandem with, in order to deliver major music events to the city.
“I am hugely proud of the brilliant team effort from everyone involved in making the concert such a success and we are now looking forward to our next show, North East Live, in June.”
One Direction were supported by Australian boyband Five Seconds of Summer warming up the crowd with their UK Number One hit, She Looks So Perfect.
Sunderland’s next concert takes place in three weeks’ time as the Stadium of Light stages the regions’ biggest pop show, blinkbox music North East Live.
Top acts performing including the sensational Jessie J, The Saturdays, Rizzle Kicks, Jason Derulo and Katy B.
Tickets and hospitality packages are still available for the show on Sunday 22nd June priced from just £25. Full detail are available at www.safcconcerts.com.
