INDIE rockers The Subways delivered a high energy performance at Independent with a career-spanning setlist.

It’s been four years since the band released their third album Money and Celebrity, but it seems they haven’t let that time go to waste as they have clearly put a lot of work into their new songs.

Touring their new self-titled album which they began working on in 2013 they opened with We Don’t Need Money To Have A Good Time followed by new song I’m In Love And It’s Burning In My Soul.

Their newer stuff was well received and it’s clear that frontman Billy Lunn still has no trouble writing brilliantly heavy, well-crafted songs that are tailored for a crowd sing-a-long. Even though the band would have no trouble playing to a larger audience, the small grungy venue was a perfect setting for this type of outfit and they seemed genuinely happy at the energetic crowd.

The crowd’s energy was elevated higher when Billy Lunn introduced old classic Mary (a song about the frontman’s mother) from their debut album Young For Eternity. It’s been 10 years since the release of the seminal album and fan favourites Oh Yeah, Rock & Roll Queen and With You all made an appearance in the set with them sounding as fresh as they did in 2005.

The band decided against leaving the stage before the encore and carried on playing which garnered massive cheers from the crowd with Lunn showing his gratitude by jumping in the mix and crowd surfing.

Bassist Charlotte Cooper must have burned a few calories as she never stopped jumping about the stage while playing, and drummer Josh Morgan was on top form after returning from illness relating to his Asperger’s Syndrome.

After a few years away the band has returned with an album that could quickly turn into another classic for them and with a performance as good as this they should have no trouble at all carrying on for another 10 years - let’s just hope they don’t leave it too long until their next album.
