A TOP international saxophonist is to visit Sunderland.
Rob Buckland, internationally acclaimed as one of the most distinctive and versatile saxophonists of his generation, will perform at West Park Church, Stockton Road, Sunderland, on July 2 from 7.30pm.
He will be accompanied by the Sunderland Symphony Orchestra as part of their Summer Concert.
Rob is Professor of Saxophone at the Northern College of Music in Manchester, and he performs regularly throughout the UK, Europe and Japan.
A full programme of orchestral music will also be on the programme, but the highlight will be the Saxophone Concerto by Ronald Binge.
David Mills, chairman of Sunderland Symphony Orchestra, said: “It is a great honour to have him performing with our orchestra.”
The orchestra was formed more than 10 years ago in response to Sunderland Council’s initiative for each ward to commemorate the Millennium.
About £2,000 was given to each ward to be spent at the discretion of the ward councillors.
Rather than create a monument or hold a one-off event, the three councillors for the former Thornholme Ward decided to create a musical group for Sunderland.
Future concerts from the group this year include Last Night of the Proms on October 15 and the Christmas Concert on December 17.
Tickets for the concert on July 2 are £8 and £5 on the door.
