CD REVIEW: Biffy Clyro – Opposites

DOUBLE album. Two words that rank alongside “IKEA trip” and “tax return” in terms of the amount of dread they generate within me.

Nevertheless, I cleared an afternoon from my busy schedule, took a deep breath and pressed play on my MP3 player.

Then it dawned on me. This is Biffy Clyro. The Biff! Big, Nirvana-meets-Metallica riffs, groovy hooks, engaging lyrics; what’s not to like?

And so it proved. Stingin’ Belle is alive with infectious energy, The Fog is prog and Biblical is as epic at the name suggests.

Physical Graffiti it isn’t, but fans of the Zeppelin classic, and rock generally, will have their fancy well and truly tickled by Opposites. Even the filler, and there’s inevitably some on a 20-track record, is fairly killer.
