TWENTY-EIGHT years after rampaging into earshot with their seminal debut Scum, it seems Britain’s most notorious extreme band have finally opted to down tools and go pop.

Ha! Who am I kidding? As though its title weren’t an indication, album number 15 finds the Birmingham quartet pummeling on the only way they know how; and frankly its hard to recall them being in finer fettle.

If you’ve found their grind-come-death metal blasts horrific and unlistenable in the past, you might as well move on - there’s nothing for you here.

For the rest of us, though, Apex Predator is an utter thrill; a typically uncompromising blitz of turbo-powered riffage and animalistic roars from a group who still charge momentum like a heard of stampeding, testosterone-fueled rhinos.

It’s an exhilarating assault, and makes 99 percent of today’s metal acts sound like cute puppies by comparison. 7/10. AW
