It’s 16 years since Leftfield last released an album, and a full 20 since their seminal debut Leftism changed the format and conventions of dance music forever.

Now, Neil Barnes has resurrected the name (albeit without partner Paul Daley) for a third studio album; a record which, against all odds, comes as an unadulterated triumph.

Electronic music has come a long way in the past two decades, but this updated take on the progressive house template remains completely exhilarating.

From the off, its synths throb, thud and fizz in thrilling unison, crafting sounds as diverse as the sweaty club banger Little Fish and Head And Shoulders, which marries wubbing bass with Sleaford Mods’ Jason Williamson to far greater effect than The Prodigy’s recent attempt, Ibiza.

Thoroughly excellent. 8/10. AW
