THIS is the fourth album by Brooklyn-based Franz Nicolay, the former keyboard player with alt-rockers The Hold Steady.
I hadn’t heard his solo work before, but will be rectifying that immediately after being gripped by this from the first listen.
It’s hard to place it within any particular genre, but that’s really not a bad thing, as there’s something here to appeal most tastes.
From the opening title track to the closing Porta Fenestella, its 12 tracks are uplifting slices of rock ‘n’ soul, bursting with hooks and melodies, delivered with passion and pride.
The standout tracks, for me, are Marfa Lights, Talk To Him In Shallow Water and Imperfect Rhyme, but in truth there’s not a bad one among them. 8/10. GW
