PUPILS are lending their voices to a drive supporting Sunderland’s homeless.
Churches in the city have come together to organise a fund-raising carol concert this weekend.
Children from Southmoor School in Grangetown will be reading poems and singing carols at Kick Start Christmas, in St Mary’s Parish Centre, Bridge Street, from 7pm on Saturday.
Event organisers hope to raise more than £1,200 to support the annual running costs for a drop-in centre at Burn Park Methodist Church, in Burn Park Road.
Kind-hearted volunteers open the church up every Sunday evening to offer much-needed food and warmth to the city’s homeless and people living in poverty or in need.
As well as young singers, the parish centre will also have a host of stalls, with homemade cakes, nail-painting, teeth-whitening, vintage clothes, raffles and much more.
Organiser Bev Ashton said: “I just wanted to thank the Print Centre, which printed up the tickets, Greggs, which donated the mince pies and everyone else who has lent a hand and helped organise the event.”
Tickets for Kick Start Christmas, priced £5 for adults, with no charge for children, are available by calling Bev on 565 4217, or on the door.
Entry price includes mince pies, with mulled wine for adults. The events starts at 7pm and finishes at 10.30pm.
