EVERYONE’S talking about Borneo Bistro.
It seems Sunderland’s best-kept dining secret is out.
I’ve been quietly converting friends to the amazing slice of deliciousness that is this unassuming cafe outside of Sunderland city centre.
But it looks like all of Borneo’s loyal fans having been doing the same.
The family-run business serving up international cuisine has been top dining spot in the city on travel website Tripadvisor for months.
People are travelling from across the North East and beyond to grab a taste of Chinese, Thai, African, Malaysian and more.
I joined the queue after work on Friday evening, where owner Kev was doing a marvellous job of serving up while talking customers through the range of dishes on offer.
Driven purely by greed from the delicious smells, my dining partner and I went for the eat-all-you-can option, which is just £6.75.
More restrained diners can opt for two main dishes and a side for £4.75, or three main dishes and a side for £5.75, with cheaper takeaway options.
I made several trips to the counter for Borneo fried chicken, yellow Thai curry, Filipino pork adobo and Malaysian beef rendang, which is the punters’ hot favourite on Tripadvisor.
Despite it being almost the end of the day for Borneo’s hardworking chef, it was all totally amazing and served up by Kev, so unlike some buffet restaurants, there’s no sticky fingers in your food.
My scoffing buddy was slightly less adventurous and stuck to just one plate of fried chicken and chips with lashings of outstanding Chinese chicken curry.
When we finally admitted we couldn’t eat any more, my leftovers were boxed up and the bill reduced for the cautious one’s lack of appetite – a nice touch which shows Borneo is still giving customers individual attention.
The buffet changes every day and there is also an English breakfast menu.
Minor gripes – no toilets, cash only and it closes at 6pm, Monday to Saturday.
Otherwise perfect in every way.
