A FESTIVAL which sees a host of colourful anime and manga characters descend on Sunderland has been nominated for an award.
The annual SunnyCon convention, which last year took place in the Seaburn Centre, has been praised for bringing international fantasy and anime writers and actors to the region.
More than 2,000 fans of Japanese comics and cartoons attended last year’s event, which featured fantasy author Marisa Meyer and anime dub actors Vic Mignogna and Cristina Vee.
Sunnycon, which brings together fans from as far afield as America, Australia, Sweden and Egypt, has been nominated in the Contribution to Culture category in the Excellence Awards, the Echo’s first awards which celebrate entertainment, hospitality and leisure in Sunderland and East Durham.
Donna Yeoman, from SunnyCon, said: “SunnyCon is the best example of contributing culture to, not only the city, but the whole region. Being the only big Japanese and anime culture convention in the north, it has built up a huge following and, not only local, but countrywide.
“The event is bright, colourful and has a fantastic Japanese cultural element with the best guests and experts from all over the world. It’s not just the one event as SunnyCon holds other mini events over the year and more areplanned for 2014.”
Winners of the awards will be announced at a ceremony at The Best Western Roker Hotel on February 27.
And there’s still time for you to make your nominations.
