HOSPITAL bosses say a documentary about Wearside’s battle to beat the bulge shows the success of its dedicated obesity ward.

The first episode in the new series of Weight Loss Ward, which features the stories of patients at Sunderland Royal Hospital’s bariatric ward, was aired last night.

Among those to be featured were Hetton residents Terry Gardner, 30, Laura Lamb, 29, and David Harper, 35.

Terry’s problem reached its peak when he tipped the scales at 47 stones, making him the heaviest on the ward.

A spokesman for City Hospitals Sunderland NHS Foundation Trust said: “As well as throwing a light on the overall epidemic of obesity, and the huge costs involved to both the families concerned and the NHS, the series illustrates just how hard it is for individuals to break the cycle of obesity and adapt their lifestyles to healthier alternatives in the face of marketing and advertising that encourages exactly the opposite.

“Since becoming one of the country’s first bariatric services, we have helped thousands of patients and their families across the North East to lead more fulfilling lives – many of their experiences are thoroughly inspiring and we hope act as examples to others who are wrestling with the challenges of obesity.”

David, who features in the three-part series, is a full-time carer for his dad, Albert, who after a lifetime working as a miner, has the lung disease emphysema.

He started gaining weight when he was working as a security guard and in the first episode weighed in at 31st.
