To mark forty years since the cult American musical Grease hit the stage, a special interactive version is coming to Newcastle Theatre Royal - and the audience are the stars.

Fans of the hit show and its famous soundtrack are treated to a full vocal warm up with their host before a screening of the classic film begins.

Then with on-screen lyrics and special props, audience members can get fully into the swing and sing their hearts out through hits including Summer Nights, Hopelessly devoted to you, Greased Lighnin’, We go together and more.

Pink wigs and greased quiffs are de rigour - and there is also a fancy dress competition to reward the audience member who makes the most authentic T-Bird, Pink Lady, cheerleader or high school nerd.

Producer Ben Freedman, who is behind Sing-a-long-a Sound of Music and Sing-a-long-a Abba, said: “Sing-a-long-a Grease is the show that audiences have been asking for since we first presented a singalong show back in 1999. It’s much more than just a film - it’s an event, an interactive experience.”

This year marks the 40th anniversary of the stage musical Grease which premiered at the Off-Broadway Eden Theatre in downtown Manhattan, before transferring to Broadway in June, 1972.

The 1972 show, about two lovers in a 1950s US high school, was based on an earlier, grittier play called Grease Lightning, first staged in Chicago the previous year.

In 1978 it spawned into a movie starring John Travolta and Olivia Newton-John.

Tickets are £17.50 and can be purchased from the Theatre Royal Box Office on 08448 11 21 21 or select your own seat and book at www.theatreroyal.co.uk.
