FROM the West End to Wearside – hit musical Jersey Boys is heading to Sunderland on its first UK tour.
The Sunderland Empire has announced that the Tony, Olivier and Grammy Award-winning show will run at the venue for a fortnight this winter.
One of the West End’s most popular shows, it follows the fortunes of iconic ’60s group Frankie Valli and The Four Seasons.
The announcement comes on the back of news that Britain’s biggest show, The Lion King, will also play the High Street West theatre this year.
Empire general manager Ben Phillips said: “We are thrilled to announce that the internationally acclaimed hit musical Jersey Boys will play the Sunderland Empire. It is a great opportunity for Sunderland to be one of the first venues to host this sensational show as part of its first-ever UK tour. This season at the Sunderland Empire is looking spectacular and looks set to be our best yet.”
The show is a musical ode to the true story of Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons and their rise to stardom from the wrong side of the tracks.
These four boys from New Jersey became one of the most successful bands in pop history, were inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame and sold 175million records worldwide, all before they turned 30.
l Jersey Boys will be at the Sunderland Empire from November 25 – December 6. Tickets go on sale on February 21.
