FORMER Sugababe Jade Ewen is treading the boards at the Sunderland Empire this week.
The pop star is starring alongside Michael McKell, best known for his role in Doctors, in jukebox musical Tonight’s The Night, which opened at the High Street West venue last night.
Penned by comedian Ben Elton, the show is based around the music of Rod Stewart and a young man, who enters into a Faustian pact to swap souls with his hero Rod Stewart.
It features tracks including Tonight’s the Night, Hot Legs, Baby Jane, Do Ya Think I’m Sexy, Maggie May, This Old Heart of Mine, I Don’t Wanna Talk About It, Ooh La La, Some Guys Have All the Luck, Forever Young, Sailing and more.
Jade says the show has a great feel-good factor.
“People love to sing along, you can see in the first act they really want to get out of their seats, but as the show goes on their confidence grows and then by the time Sailing is on at the end, they’re all joining in,” she explained.
Speaking about being in the theatre spotlight, she said: “I went to the Sylvia Young Theatre School and though I always loved being on stage, music was my passion, so I chose to pursue that, but I never forgot about theatre.”
Rod Stewart himself has thrown his support behind the tour.
He said: “In the past, any ideas for musicals revolving around my songs just didn’t work for me.
“It was only when we were approached to do Tonight’s The Night that the idea really took off.
“I’m absolutely thrilled that this great show is touring the UK again.”
