PUPILS have been going back in time to research the stories of Sunderland soldiers.
Red House Academy students have thrown themselves into a project exploring and researching the unique stories of soldiers from Wearside who took part in campaigns of the Great War.
Working alongside Beamish Museum and the DLI Museum in Durham, they researched life on the Western and Home Front during the First World War.
The culmination of their work is a display at Bede’s Bakehouse, in St Peter’s Church, Monkwearmouth, which is running until March 2.
Inspired by the project, gallery curator Ian Potts is now hoping to compile a website on the Sunderland soldiers.
He said: “I have taken students from St Aidan’s School to the local history library, collecting names and taking photos. Many of the collected names were read out at the school’s remembrance service on November 11.
“I would be interested in finding out the names of more soldiers and any additional stories and photographs with a view to setting up a web page next year to coincide with the centenary of the Great War.”

The Bede Bakehouse Gallery is open Monday to Saturday, from 10.30am to 2.30pm, and Sunday, from 1pm to 2.30pm.
