MERRYMAKERS congregated at Sunderland Minster for a celebration of local music, food and drink.

The landmark church was taken over by stalls for Sanctuary, which took place across the Bank Holiday weekend.

The event, the first of its kind, saw a host of local music acts, including The Lake Poets, take to the stage, while visitors enjoyed street food from around the world.

The sight of a champagne bar and beer stalls in the church was a little unusual, but organisers say it was great to see the building used in an alternative way by the community.

Stewart Bowden, from Bowden Bars and Voucher For You, was selling draft beer at the event, which he hopes will be the first of many.

“It’s an unusual concept for the church,” said Stewart. “But it’s such a beautiful venue and it’s really worked. There’s been a really great atmosphere. I don’t think people knew what to expect, but the feedback has been really positive.

“Everyone always says they want something different in Sunderland but we need Sunderland to support it. It would be great to have an event like this at least four times a year.”

Food was provided by stalls including Juniper’s Pantry in
Barnes.

David Gill from Juniper’s said: “It’s been busier than I expected. This is a cracking venue and a beautiful part of Sunderland so it’s great to see it used in this way. I think this event has legs.”

Other highlights included performances from Happy Cats and North Road.

The event was put together by a new satellite club of Sunderland Rotary Group to raise funds for a variety of good causes.
