Young musicians showcase talents in Sunderland park

FOLLOWING in the footsteps of some of Sunderland’s most successful musicians, bands took to the stage in Mowbray Park.

Young people who attend Sunderland Music Workshops – which has fostered the talents of The Futureheads and Field Music – performed in the bandstand as part of the annual Smile concert to showcase the sounds they’ve produced at the workshops.

The brainchild of youth worker Dave Murray, the Saturday morning sessions are celebrating 20 years in the city.

Over the past two decades, a host of musicians have passed through the doors of the influential workshops which encourage young people to write, record and perform their own tracks. Dave said: “The idea of the workshops was always to get young people to socialise with each other, rather than standing about on street corners. Music is a good vehicle, but the idea is to boost their self-esteem and confidence and to make them a positive part of society.”
