BRINGING Cole to Newcastle on her first solo tour was always going to be a big deal.
Since rising from the ashes of a pretty poor reality show, Popstars: the Rivals, the Geordie starlet has gone on to become something of a local hero thanks to her infectious ditties and picture-perfect appearance.
Despite the acres of column inches she’s accrued about her personal life, it is, of course, music which is the pint-sized pop princess’ main career.
Though her triumphant homecoming was relatively short, she was only on stage for about 1hr15mins, the 29-year-old managed to shoehorn a raft of songs from her past three albums into the gig.
Launching on to stage in a glitter-strewn jumpsuit, she worked her way through a selection of hits from current album A Million Lights including the (appallingly spelt) Sexy Den A Mutha, Call My Name and Girl In The Mirror.
In a teaser for Girls Aloud’s forthcoming reunion, she then performed a pop-tastic pick ‘n’ mix of the band’s hits such as The Promise and Love Machine.
It’s standard procedure for popstars to wax lyrical on stage about how delighted they are to be there, but Cheryl seemed genuinely humbled to be performing at her home arena in her own tour, something she says she dreamt of as a child.
Her fellow Geordies were practically effervescent in their enthusiasm for their idol, chanting her name with all their might.
After a sojourn to a stage in the middle of the arena for a more up close and personal performance, Chezza headed back to the main stage for the finale.
Fight for this Love was what everyone was waiting for and Cole didn’t disappoint, appearing in military-inspired regalia as she rallied her adoring troops to dance.
