Muse - The 2nd Law

T’S been a while – 2006’s Black Holes and Revelations to be exact – since Muse stopped trying to be Radiohead and started enjoying themselves.

On The 2nd Law, enjoyment, along with volume, odd instruments and futuristic weirdness, is turned to 11.

The Queen influence is very much to the fore on Olympic opus Survival, but as the brilliant single Madness shows, with it’s wobbling bassline emerging from what looks like an iPad with a fretboard, Muse can write cutting-edge pop too.

If the Mayans were right, and the apocalypse is nigh, this is the perfect soundtrack.

If, like Professor Brian Cox, you’ve researched that and think it’s nonsense, then have a listen anyway – it’s probably right up your street.

And Professor Brian Cox’s come to think of it.

Richard Lewis
